She travelled to Kelly's home in Chicago for the sessions while she was still a student at the Detroit High School of the Performing Arts. She remained a "straight A's" student throughout the first stage of her recording career, persevering with her education despite commercial success. After marrying Kelly, Aaliyah released 1996's superior follow-up, One In A Million, on which she worked with hotshot producer Timbaland. THE SINGER was making the video on Abaco Island, about 170 miles east of south Florida. All nine passengers were from the United States, said Superintendent Basil Rahming of the Grand Bahama police department.

R&B sensation Aaliyah sold a million copies of her debut album “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number” in 1994 and more recently the single “Try Again” earned her a Grammy nomination for best female R&B vocalist. One of her projects was to have been an appearance in a sequel to the movie “The Matrix.”

Rahming told Reuters the twin-engine propeller plane apparently suffered engine failure on take-off and crashed into bushes about 200 feet from the end of the runway, bursting into flames. The plane was headed for Opa-Locka, an airport on the outskirts of Miami, when it crashed.

“We find it devastating and most unfortunate that after having this world-famous star Aaliyah and her crew select the Bahamas as their choice location for her latest video, the project has climaxed on such a tragic note,” said Minister of Tourism Tommy Turnquest, who happened to be visiting Abaco Island, where the plane went down.

A NICE GIRL: Abaco Island Chief Councilor Silbert Mills said those killed included two women and six men.

Islander Derek Russell, who worked for the group during the video shoot, said he got the artist’s autograph before the accident.
“She’s a nice girl, a friendly girl,” he said.

The cause of the crash was unclear. Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta, said the plane was a Cessna 402 owned by Skystream, a company based in Pembroke Pines, Fla. But Rahming said the plane was operated by U.S. company Blackhawk International Airways.

The twin-engine Cessna that carried Aaliyah and a film crew. Bergen said the plane crashed at the end of the airport’s runway at 6:50 p.m. With nine passengers, the plane was at capacity. Although the crash occurred in the Bahamas, the investigation into what caused it was likely to include experts from the U.S. National Transportation and Safety Board since the crashed plane was operated by an American firm.

According to the NTSB, the last crash of a Cessna 402 was in 1992, in Kiana, Alaska.

Sadly, Aaliyah was the latest pop star to meet her fate in an airplane. Buddy Holly, J.P. “Big Bopper” Richardson and Ritchie Valens, who was just 17, died in 1959 while flying to a concert in the United States. Soul singer Otis Redding, Ricky Nelson, two members of Lynyrd Skynyrd and John Denver also died in plane crashes, as also did John Kennedy Jr.

FIRST ALBUM AT 14
Aaliyah she made her stage debut as an orphan in a production of “Annie” at the age of 6. Her uncle was married to soul singer Gladys Knight, who invited Aaliyah to perform with her during a five-night stint in Las Vegas at age 11.

Aaliyah made her feature acting debut in the film “Romeo Must Die” and recently starred in the title role of the latest Anne Rice vampire thriller, “The Queen of the Damned.”

“She was like one of my daughters; she was one of the sweetest girls in the world,” said Quincy Jones, 68, the Grammy-winning producer, arranger and composer. “She vacationed with me and my family together in Fiji. I loved her and respected her, and I am absolutely devastated.”

Aaliyah studied at Detroit High School for Fine and Performing Arts and struck a licensing deal as a teen-ager after her uncle, Barry Hankerson, formed Blackground Records.

She went gold with her debut album, “Age Ain’t Nothing But Number,” when she was just 14 in 1994 and benefited from working closely with hip-hop producer R. Kelly.

“One in a Million,” released in 1996, pioneered a new R&B sound which tended towards computer-generated backing tracks instead of live instrumentation. This year she released her third successful album “Aaliyah.”

Her album, “Aaliyah,” featured regular Aaliyah contributors Timbaland and Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott. She took on the issue of domestic violence in the slow tune “Never No More” and experimented with jazz rhythms in “I Care 4 U.” The album was a top seller earlier this month, according to industry sources.
